The complexity of social interactions in general and psychotherapy in particular — verbal, nonverbal and paraverbal content; personal and historical experiences of the participants; the interaction of these within the context of the encounter — are what favor viewing a finite set of clinical vignettes from a variety of vantage points as a means by which to capture the subtleties and nuances of the interactions. This is equally true for noting how trance can be facilitated. By looking at a variety of hypnotic phenomena and linguistic structures — age regression; dissociation; depotentiating conscious sets; employing metaphors, triplicates, and stories — we see that the matrix of social interactions and interventions provides a broad palette from which we can select, mix, and blend our skills as clinicians to promote opportunities for change and growth.

Metaphors tend to be thought of as linguistic devices. Although this is certainly true, gestures and paraverbal aspects of communication can also be employed metaphorically. When we speak in a normal conversational tone, the implication is that this is a social discourse. When we alter our voice, perhaps changing the tone or pacing of our words and or the direction toward which we locate our voice, we are implying that something is different. Depending on the context and the timing, these paraverbal alterations have communicative impact akin to metaphors. Just as abstract targets like love, beauty, and joy can be conveyed via metaphorical sources, intimating that an obsessional thought process can be supplanted by a deeper sense of calm can be communicated by utilizing alterations in our rate of speaking as the source.

Whether it is addressing parts directly, eliciting hypnotic phenomena, employing paraverbal markers, or violating expectations by employing a variation that deviate from a theme, facilitating dissociation is the gateway to hypnotic responsiveness. Dissociation is not the therapeutic goal in and of itself. It is a process within which a person may have an experience that defies their prototypical self-experience or experience of the world. This experiential anomaly calls for a reevaluation. It is this process of dissociation and consequent demand for a narrative or experiential reconciliation that promotes psychological flexibility and initiates the mutative process.

All “talk therapy” is built on language. Hypnotically informed therapy employs the constructs of language: meaning, intent, implication, and context to activate and elicit the skills, learning, and resources that are evoked by the intentional use of these constructs. I have chosen to place this discussion of linguistic structure in the strategy section as opposed to the section on communication because the use of linguistic constructions such as indirect suggestions, stories, double entendres and other forms of wordplay are tools of intention. The therapist has a target, a strategic intent, and these devices can be used in the service of promoting absorption, disrupting conscious sets, and facilitating dissociative processes. I see these elements of the interaction as dimensions of technique and/or strategy.
